EXTRACT FROM THE BOOK
Peace is not just the absence of sound.
It is the cool and quiet state of mind.

"If one had mystical powers and could hover around the world and ascertain how many people are living contented lives, at peace with themselves, the answer would be very few or hardly any. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism who was born in 1466, said, ‘The whole world is troubled.’ We feel calm for a few minutes, happy when we get some material thing that we have been longing for, but the sense of well-being does not last very long. We are rushing again and the quest for personal peace is sacrificed because we do not believe that this or that thing will be done on time or properly. We are hard on ourselves, and good at making other peoples’ lives hell as well.

Some people report experiencing slight peace for a short while after meeting or listening to a wise person or reading a serious book. When they get back to work, and the rest of their life, it is all gone. With others, the experience lasts only as long as the person is there for them or near them. When their ‘guru’ is no longer accessible, they revert to their old habits. Anyway, most of the so-called’ saintly persons’ who profess to have miraculous powers have been exposed as fake or charlatans. Some groups are formed to find a peaceful orientation, but before long the members drift away and the ‘club’ comes to an end.

Bhagavad-Gita tells us that in life there are two paths: one is the path of attraction and the second one is the path of dedication. The path of attraction is gravitating towards whatever exerts a pull on us; it may be following our instincts, or our desires. We make choices which we can’t really justify, but at the point of making a decision, we feel that is what we want to do."
